  • Topolewski

A keen interest in photography and photo-journalism during high school eventually led John Van Osdol to pursue making moving pictures during his college years at Northwestern University. John ultimately graduated Northwestern in 1986 with a Bachelor of Science in Radio, Television and Film.

Having learned all aspects of production during school and an internship at FirstChicago Telemedia, John moved back to Detroit after school and accepted a Junior Producer position at Ross Roy Inc. John quickly cut his teeth on producing television and radio ads for clients including Kmart, Blue Cross & Blue Shield, Stroh Foods, Michigan Travel Bureau and NBD Bank among others.

A long standing passion for the outdoors and adventure predicated a move to Campbell-Mithun-Esty in 1990 to work on the Jeep and Eagle accounts. In 1993, John was promoted to Head of Broadcast Production, a title he retained when CME was folded into the Bozell Detroit offices in 1994. John was handed the additional duties of Chrysler and Plymouth Broadcast production at that time.

1994 was also a significant year in that a Jeep spot that John produced called "Snow Covered" won the coveted Grand Prix in the Cannes Advertising Festival. This was the highest honor amongst other significant awards won during the 90's for his work on Jeep.

This notoriety allowed the agency to land other accounts like Hush Puppies, Consumers Power, Olympia Entertainment, Little Caesars and Coleman.

John was named to Crain Publishing's list of "40 Under 40" in 1998.

In 2001, John decided to rejoin longtime colleague Gary Topolewski at D'Arcy as Head of Broadcast to help work on Cadillac, Pontiac and Goodwrench. John was integral in developing the Break Through campaign which re-launched Cadillac to the tune of Led Zeppelin's "Rock & Roll".

John also helped manage and evolve Pontiac as it integrated into various online and viral media outlets. When Mr. Goodwrench was reintroduced in 2003, John was deeply involved to insure the spots with Stephen Colbert helped drive home the service & parts message for GM.

In 2006, John again joined forces with Gary Topolewski to start their own firm, "Topolewski". In a short period of time, work was completed for various clients from Quiznos Subs to Art Van Furniture, Courtesy Chevrolet, St. Mary Mercy Hospital and others.

John resides in Grosse Pointe Park, Michigan, with his wife and three children.

Armin Pohl bio

  • Armin Pohl

A natural born artist and visionary, Armin Pohl has been exploring innovative ways to fully express his ideas for as long as he can remember.

As a child, Armin grasped any medium or technique available that might have allowed him to create the pictures that would express the ideas within him, but there were always boundaries, barriers or limits to his efforts.

During his teen years, in the early 80's, Armin saw the film "Tron" and became fascinated by the possibilities of computer animation. What was seemingly just another "flick" turned out to be his epiphany. He first set out to study and train as a graphic artist, and in 1990 he began focusing on the 3D-world. Armin first applied his training to commercial applications by designing TV-trailers and advertisements. Next, he specialized in compositing and motion graphics as a freelance artist for several client companies.

Never forgetting his primary vision, that being to explore the boundaries of the virtual world being taken for real from its viewer, Armin finally saw an opportunity to move his dream forward when he joined Mackevision in 1995.

At Mackevision Armin found a small community that was equally interested in exploring artistic innovation possibilities. Together, Armin and his colleagues expanded their technical range of tools and attracted others with the same passion. From these early efforts and innovations of a few, Mackevision has grown to be one of the leading houses for visualization and computer animation.

Since taking the reigns as CEO of Mackevision in 1999, Armin's vision has been to bring an unsurpassed and enviable level of quality to the global market with system solutions which help to generate virtual content with easy-to-use interfaces.

Having established itself in the U S. with several clients, Mackevision has taken a bold step to capture the attention of the American market, where Armin believes that the creativity, quality, content and reliability he has strived to achieve throughout his career will finally have found its most appreciative audience.

Heiko Wenczel

  • Heiko Wenczel

Heiko Wenczel officially joined MACKEVISION to open its US Division in Detroit. This event was the culmination of a fruitful collaboration between his visualization database development team and Mackevision, as together they labored to create a new configuration system with extraordinary image quality.

Heiko began his post-graduate career as an architect for Mercedes Benz where he participated in the planning and visualization of projects within the plant. It was in this capacity that he realized that perfect data well organized within a system seemed to be the key to efficient work.

Turning his attention from plant processes to the product, Heiko joined an extraordinary team focused on finding a way to build a comprehensive visual configuration system for the Mercedes fleet; this would be the first of its kind, showing all configurable aspects of each vehicle. During this process he again realized the importance of perfect data; photo-realistic image quality could only be achieved utilizing a perfect database. To that end, he generated a data preparation process which could be used for all marketing needs within the company.

Team Visir was established as the central database for visualization data, but their main goal had always been to create a new configuration system with extraordinary image quality. Armed with their innovations in data management, Heiko and his team joined forces with MACKEVISION to create this new tool, which will be announced at the CGAM Conference.

Realizing the potential within that knowledge and workflow for motion pictures, Heiko accepted a position with MACKEVISION as Digital Division Manager and moved to Detroit, doing business in the United States and thereby establishing MACKEVISION, USA in the Motor City.

Gerhard Bonnet

  • Gerhard Bonnet
  • Chief Executive Officer
  • SpheronVR AG

Since 1998, Gerhard Bonnet and his team at SpheronVR AG are setting new standards for professional digital photography.

Gerhard started his career as a scientist. Being fascinated by photography in general, he realized the potential of developing a digital panoramic camera in late 1997. The first prototype was shown at Photokina 1998 and it earned real enthusiastic responses. So the decision going professional was made and in 1999 the first camera generation was produced and released.

Establishing SpheronVR AG in February 2000 then paved the way for further innovative developments, such as the full spherical 50 megapixel SpheroCam; and allowed for organising modern in-house production facilities and professional customer services.

As one of the company's founders, Gerhard sees himself as a driver of innovation within the enterprise: the latest camera system, the 26 f-stop dynamic range SpheroCam HDR, comes with a full spherical field of view and is able to capture almost every real-world luminosity value, from the darkest shadows through to the brightest sunlight – all in one single scan.

In parallel to his management at SpheronVR, Gerhard co-founded and contributed to two other successful companies, the "RaumComputer AG" and "GiTAb GmbH".

These days Gerhard conducts an extensive research program on the integration of full spherical HDR imagery with 3d laser scanning in order to provide complete 3D virtual sets.

Her other visual effects supervisor credits include: Ridley Scott's Matchstick Men; Anger Management; Men in Black II (Lockertown sequence); Riding in Cars with Boys; Big Daddy; Patch Adams; and The Postman. She also supervised the 2D test for The Polar Express and was pre-production and Part 1, VFX supervisor for Cast Away.

In addition to feature films, Duggal also has worked on a number of design projects at Imageworks. She was production designer for Siggraph Electronic Theatre 2001, and she created the title design for the groundbreaking Technology Entertainment and Design conference (TED) in 2004.

Duggal joined Imageworks at the invitation of visual effects legend Ken Ralston to establish and lead a high-speed compositing (HSC) department for the newly created company in 1996. As Director of HSC, Duggal supervised a team of artists, production coordinators, and technical assistants for three years before transitioning into the augmented role of creative director of HSC. The move to creative director allowed her to take on the additional responsibilities of visual effects supervisor, where she benefited from Ralston's guidance.

She first met Ralston when both were at Industrial Light & Magic (ILM), where she was a supervising lead Flame artist on a number of high profile feature projects including Mission Impossible, Congo and Bob Zemeckis' television series, “Tales from the Crypt.” Additionally, she served as Flame artist on Village of the Damned and The Indian in the Cupboard plus contributed in the design phase of Jumanji and Star Wars: A New Hope.

Prior to that, Duggal was at Steep Hollow Productions as a Flame artist on Terminal Velocity, and at Colossal Pictures, where she did commercial work as supervising lead Flame artist and served as a compositing consultant on James and the Giant Peach.

Duggal's career in movies began when Lightmotive Fatman Inc. brought her to Los Angeles as a Flame artist on Super Mario Brothers. During this production, Duggal was one of a core group of people responsible for establishing the first Flame digital compositing system used in the production world. She previously had been based in London, where she created high resolution digital composites for the best advertising and design agencies as well as photographers in the U.K. Immediately before moving to the U.S. she was working for award-winning wildlife photographer Steve Bloom.

Duggal is an active member of the Visual Effects Society (VES) technology committee, and holds a BA Degree, with honors, in Graphic Design.
